Guardiola: “We both want the ball and suffer without it”/ "Ambos queremos el balon y ambos sufrimos sin El"

Pep Guardiola won’t be giving up on the team’s trademark style for the game against Arsenal, even though the team will be up against a side who share their attacking instincts.
Guardiola: “We both want the ball and suffer without it”
Training in Barcelona
The squad gave up the chance to train in London this evening, as is usual in Champions League games, and Guardiola put his decision to have a session in Barcelona this morning instead because of the number of players he’s got who’ve been playing a lot of games of late: “I just wanted to train in Barcelona and not here”.
Andres Iniesta and Pep Guardiola both rushed off to the Emirates Stadium as soon as they arrived in England for their pre-match press conferences and the boss was quick to warn that his players were in for a tough game against a great team, as they tried to get back into Champions League gear again. Similar styles Guardiola admitted the Gunners were not his ideal opponents for the last 16: “I like watching Arsenal, but I’d rather not be playing against them. We are two teams who want the ball and we both suffer without it. We want possession for as long as possible in order to make as many attacking situations as we can”. Possession key 2011-02-15_ENTRENO_103.JPGWith possession key, the boss insisted: “we have to be egotistical and want the ball. If Arsenal dominate, they will flood you with goal chances”, whilst making it clear that whatever happens: “you will see the Barça team that we have prepared before the game starts”.

Echoing Iniesta, Guardiola also expressed his belief that the second leg would decide the game, whilst stressing: “scoring away from home is vital in Europe”.
Back in the European groove After the two month break, the Champions League is again back on the agenda and Guardiola wants his players to get back into the European groove: “this is going to be a tough game and our ties at this stage in the last two seasons (against Lyon and Stuttgart) were our worst performances in the competition. We have to charge ourselves up for this to be the quickest to get into the swing of things. I hope that the atmosphere and the quality of our opponents will help us to do that”.

Iniesta: “We are up against a very good team”/"Nos enfrentaremos ante un gran equipo"

Andrés Iniesta is set to play at the Emirates Stadium for the first time in his career on Wednesday and he believes: “Arsenal are a very good team and we will have to play really well to get a good result”.

Back in London
Iniesta will always be remembered for his winning goal in the Champions League semi final against Chelsea two years ago that saw the team through to the Rome final, but he insisted: “that’s water under the bridge now, two years ago it was one thing and now it’s another. The stadium is different and so are the circumstances of our team”.
Iniseta missed last year’s game against the London club, but he is clearly looking forward to this season’s matchup: “it should be a very attractive game and we hope to put in a good performance. They are a team you have to take notice of and we will have be very focussed and above all take our chances and at all times try and play our own style of football”. League on hold 2011-02-15_ENTRENO_110.JPGIniesta stressed that: “we have changed our mindset now – we have to forget the draw in Gijon the other day - this is the Champions League!”. The World Cup winner was also not worried about which tactics Arsenal would employ: “regardless of what they do, we have to play our own football, stay concentrated the whole game and every one of us has to make sure we do what we are supposed to do, not make mistakes and create chances. We have to do our job just as well in attack as in defence, because we are up against a very serious and dangerous outfit”.
Second leg will be decisive Iniesta also believes that: “nobody expects that the tie will be settled after Wednesday’s game. That will have to wait until the end of the second leg, which is when it will all be decided….. We have to take our chances and do things right to get a good result thanks to a whole team effort”.

Ibrahim Afellay Arrives to Camp Nou/Ibrahim Afellay llego a Camp Nou

Ibrahim Afellay takes the number 20 shirt

Afellay took his first steps onto the Nou Camp pitch as a Barça player this lunchtime, with his new number 20 shitr which he’ll wear from January 1st.
“I can’t wait to play with Messi and Iniesta”

Marc Guillén
In an interview with Barça TV and www.fcbarcelona.cat Ibrahim Afellay talked about his arrival at the club and stressed the “good feeling” he’d had after his first contact with Guardiola, as well as how much the Stadium had impressed him.
What were your feelings after your first day at the Club?
2010-12-24_ALFELLAY_28.JPG“It was a great day for me. It was special –and very long too! There were a lot of medical tests. When I saw the Stadium it was a really special moment, it looked so big and beautiful”.

What does it mean to you to be a Barça player?
“Every player wants to play here at least once in their life and when I do, it’ll be like a dream come true”.

What’s your first memory of Barça?
“Players like Romário, Ronaldo, Koeman’s goal at Wembley…. and Cruyff of course, and others such as Cocu or Kluivert.”

How did you feel when you first heard Barça were interested in you?
“I was very happy. It was a special moment, my manager called me up and I told him straight away that Barça were my first option. The negotiations were very quick and everything went smoothly”.

Had you ever imagined you’d play for Barça?
“As a Barça fan, you watch the team as a kid and you imagine playing there, but as you get older you realise you have to be very special to be at this club”.

You joined the PSV first team when you were just 17, what was that like?
“Everything was new for me and it was tough at first, all my teammates were older and stronger than me”.

How would you describe your seven years at PSV? afellaY-gol.jpg“So far it’s the only club I’ve played for. I went through the youth team and into the first team - it’s a big part of my life”.

Who has been the best coach you’ve ever had?
“There are a lot who have been important, but I would say the best has been Hiddink. He decided to bring me up into the first team squad and I am still in contact with him. Above all, Hiddink showed me how to live as a professional, because football is a very hard job, from the outside it can seem very nice, but there is a lot of hard work involved”.

Do you consider yourself mature at the age of 24?
“Yes. I’m still young, but I’ve played a lot of games. I’ve been to a European Championship and I was at the last World Cup. All that experience has been good for me”.

Have you been following Barça this season?
2010-12-23_ENTREVISTA_BENVINGUT_AFELLAY_002.jpg“Yes, and for a long time now. Barça play the best football in the world. Obviously, since the first contact was made, I’ve been taking a much closer interest too”.

What do you think when you see games like the Real Madrid clash?
“I thought ‘I want to be there – that’s how I want to play’”

Many say that was the best game ever, would you agree? “Yes, I would, though the 2-6 at the Bernabeu was also a great game – in both matches Barça played football from another planet”.

How do you think you will adapt to the team?
“I’ll work hard and do my best. It won’t be easy at first, but I’ll do everything I can to win a place in the team”.

You are a versatile player. What’s your favourite position?
“I can play in a lot of positions. I have lots of options in midfield. It’s up to the boss where he uses me and wherever that is I will try and do my best”.

What was your first conversation with Josep Guardiola like? “Positive. He welcomed me to the club and he transmitted a good feeling”.

What do you think about being able to ply with players like Iniesta or Messi – some people have compared you to Iniesta.
2010-11-29_PARTIDO_07.JPG“They are the best in the world. I can’t wait to play with them. I can’t compare with Iniesta, he has so much quality. Every player is different and has his own points”.

What has impressed you about Barça so far? “Undoubtedly, the Stadium. I’d never been here and, well it’s majestic and on TV it looks great, but in person it’s so big it just leaves you open mouthed”.

UEFA and Barça say no to racism

www.fcbarcelona.cat

UEFA are continuing the fight against racism this season and there will be a series of activities before FC Barcelona's game against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday evening in Camp Nou.

European football's governing body aim to eliminate the problem from the game and are highlighting the seriousness of it before each of the 16 matches in the Champions League this week. Working with partners Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE), the campaign will be given high-profile coverage as part of activities marking the Action Week.

Video message Before Barça's game against Copenhagen a message will be shown on the giant screens in Camp Nou and matchday announcer, Manel Vich, will read a statement supporting the cause. Both sets of players will take to the field before kick off sporting t-shirts with the anti-racism message while both captains will wear special wristbands.

Blaugrana campaign FC Barcelona are helping the anti-racism initiative as one more aspect of their alliance with UNESCO through the Blaurgana's Fundació. The Fundació have helped to take the subject to the European Parliament with a programme called 'the voice of the young against racism'. The outcome of the project led members of the European Clubs Association to include anti-racist clauses in the contracts of their players. Now the Fundació is planning a new venture with UNESCO for this season.

Messi: El mejor del Mundo Dentro y Fuera de La Cancha/Messi: The Best In and Off the Field

Messi presents his Foundation

In Buenos Aires, Messi has revealed the results and projects of his Foundation. He deems his social work "the best individual triumph possible".

People from the sports, culture and political world in Argentina attended Leo Messi’s gala presentation of his Foundation created in 2007 to promote equal health and education among children. Some 500 people were at the Hotel Sofitel Reserva Los Cardales in Buenos Aires.

Club representation
The people there to support Messi included Argentina coach, Sergio Batista; coaches José Pekerman and Carlos Bianchi, tennis star Juan Martín del Potro and Gabriel Masfurroll, vice president of the Fundació FC Barcelona, in representation of the club, and also members of UNICEF.

The gala included a number of folklore shows and a review of the good work done by the Fundación Leo Messi. "This is better than any individual triumph", commented Messi.

Ronaldinho involved
A video was also shown of Ronaldinho, a close friend of Messi’s, speaking about the importance of the charity work promoted by the Barcelona number 10. The gala also reminded listeners of things like the way Messi travelled to Haiti as the UNICEF goodwill ambassador, and the creation of a children’s play area in the maternity ward of the Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron de Barcelona.

History... "The Colours"

The colours

One of the most distinctive elements of FC Barcelona are the colours the players wear.

Scarlet and blue have featured on the club shirt for more than one hundred years and the club is widely known as the ‘Blaugrana’ in reference to the names of these colours in the Catalan language. However, although the shirt has remained relatively constant in design over the years, the team shorts were white for the first ten years of club history, then switched to black, and were only blue from the 1920s onwards.

Nut just why Barça originally chose to wear these shirt colours has been matter of much debate among club historians, and although several theories have been put forward, nobody has ever managed to provide substantial evidence that the colours were chosen for any symbolic reason. Naturally, most of the theories are related to the foundation and origins of the club. For instance, it was claimed for several years that the Barça colours were adopted from a Swiss club that Gamper had founded earlier in his life, or that they were the colours of the Swiss canton that the founder was from. We now know that these hypotheses are highly unlikely to be true.

There is another common but unproven theory that the founders based their choice on the colours of the blue and red accountancy pencils that were so popular at the time. And there are other more prosaic suggestions, for instance the one which maintains that the mother of the Comamala brothers supplied the players with red and blue sashes so that they could differentiate between each other in the days before they had a kit of their own. But, as stated earlier, none of these theories have ever managed to offer conclusive evidence of why it was that Barça used these colours from its very earliest days. But what can be sure is that the Barça shirt has gone on to be one of the most recognisable and enigmatic shirt designs in world football.

Busquets Talisman

Sandra Sarmiento
The midfielder has won 22 consecutive league games to set a tournament record. Puyol is second with 21 wins.
He has an established place in this historic Barça team. With his pinpoint passing and spot-on tackling, Sergio Busquets is now an ever-present in the first team plans and has even managed to win a place ahead of the great Javier Mascherano. And when it comes to the big occasions, he can always be relied upon to deliver. He has built up an extraordinary curriculum and can now boast a record nobody has ever matched before. Whether or not it is coincidence, no player other than Busquets has ever won so many league games in a row.

Busquets = victory fcb-r._madrid_x20x.JPGGuardiola has only rested Sergio Busquets in four games this season, and as it happens, that includes the only two games the team has not won (the defeat to Hercules and the draw with Mallorca). That makes for 18 wins in a row if we count last season’s triumphs against Villarreal, Tenerife, Sevilla and Valladolid. Nobody has ever done that before, although Puyol is close behind with 21: 16 this season and 5 last year, because the captain also appeared in the game against Xerez.

Combination play 2011-02-05_PARTIDO_17.JPGThis record for Busquets goes hand in hand with the first team’s triumphant run. FCB have broken a 50 year old record and the Catalan midfielder can be proud to have made a major contribution to that in a team that is on good course to do even better than its amazing 99 point season last out.

The Chant that identifies all feeling Blaugrana/El Cantico que Indentifica todo un sentimiento Blaugrana

The anthems

It has become a fully established club tradition that in the build up to games at the Camp Nou, the club anthem, called ‘El Cant del Barça' is played on the stadium loudspeaker system, and all the fans sing along in unison.
It was first performed on November 27, 1974, before the game that marked the end of the 75th anniversary celebrations. A choir of 3,600, conducted by Oriol Martorell, gathered on the pitch for the very first public performance of the new anthem. The words were written by Josep Maria Espinàs and Jaume Picas, and the music was composed by Manuel Valls. The song quickly grew in popularity. The fans loved the fact that they could clap their hands in time to its catchy rhythm, and the words perfectly depicted the values of supporting Barça, especially the spirit of welcoming outsiders into Catalan society, a spirit that is reflected all the way through the club membership.
However, this is not the only anthem the club has had over the years. The first was unveiled on February 18, 1923, with words by Rafael Folch i Capdevila and music by Enric Morera. It was performed by the Orfeó Gracienc choir, for the first time at the old Les Corts stadium as part of Catalan football tribute to Joan Gamper. In keeping with the grandiloquent mood of the times, the words described the relationship between “sport and the Catalan nation ”.
Later, on occasion of the 50th anniversary, Esteve Calzada wrote the words for a new anthem, which was set to music by Joan Dotras. It was called 'Barcelona, sempre amunt!' (‘Always up with Barcelona!), and despite the political climate of the period, it was written in Catalan.
Josep Badia, in 1957, also used Catalan in the words to a third anthem, 'Himne a l’Estadi' (Anthem for the Stadium’), for the inauguration of the Camp Nou. This was the first time that the word 'Barça' appeared in a club anthem, for which the music was composed by Adolf Cabané.
veu_cas  Anthem 1957 ‘El Cant del Barça' has been so successful that all the previous anthems were soon forgotten, even 'Himne de l’Estadi', which was the official tune in 1974. And it has now become such a part of club tradition that 30m years later, nobody could possibly imagine there to be any need for a new anthem. An anthem was written for the Club Centenary, called 'Cant del Centenari', first performed on September 22, 1998, with words by Ramon Solsona and music by Antoni Ros Marbà, but it was made clear from the start that the song was only going to be used within the context of those celebrations.

Tan se val d'on venim
Si del sud o del nord
